Definisi kalimat pasif

Ketika mempelajari tata bahasa Inggris, kita akan mengenal kalimat aktif dan kalimat pasif. Yang dimaksud dengan kalimat aktif yaitu ketika subjek dari kalimat tersebut melakukan pekerjaan atau suatu aktifitas terhadap objek, sementara kalimat pasif terbentuk ketika kita mengatakan apa yang terjadi terhadap subjek, dan ditandai dengan meletakkan objek di bagian awal kallimat.

Active   : Somebody built a building in 2018.

Passive : This building was built in 2018.

—Dalam kalimat pasif, tentang siapa atau apa yang menyebabkan aktifitas tersebut biasanya akan menjadi tidak penting atau tidak diketahui.

                A lot of money was robbed  yesterday. (kita tidak tahu siapa yang merampok uang tersebut)

This room is swept everyday. (dalam kalimat ini, orang yang menyapu tidak terlalu penting untuk disebutkan)

Millions of products have been sold in a few days only.

— Jika kita ingin menyatakan siapa yang melakukan aktifitas tersebut atau yang menyebabkan aktifitss terjadi, kita akan menggunakan by …

                This company was run by PT Raja Sejahtera.

The doll is made by my mother.

— Rumus yang digunakan untuk membentuk kalimat pasif:

S +be (is/was, dll) + past participle

— Perubahan bentuk kalimat active dan passive untuk beberapa tenses, bisa dilihat dibawah ini.

Simple Present

(+)Active :

Somebody washes my clothes every Sunday.

(-)Active :

She doesn’t write a report.

(?)Active :

Do they call you miss?

Passive :

My clothes are washed (by somebody) every Sunday.

Passive :

A report is not written by her.

Passive :

Yes, I was called miss

Simple Past

(+)Active :

They made sandwiches yesterday at the party.

Passive :

Sandwiches were made by them yesterday at the party.

(-)Active :

Somebody didn’t bring the notes in the meeting.

Passive :

The notes weren’t brought in the meeting

(?)Active :

Did he take your money?

Passive :

No,  my money wasn’t taken.


Modals Passive

Active:

He should bring a pencil and an eraser .
Passive:

A pencil and an eraser should be brought by him.

Active:

We can’t explain the situation.

Passive:

The situations can’t be explained by us.

Active:

Students must follow the rules.

Passive:

The rules must be followed by students.

Perfect Tenses

Active:

Somebody has sent the invitation to the wrong address.

Passive:

The invitation has been sent to the wrong address.

Active:

Some people have cleaned the rooms.

Passive:

The rooms have been cleaned.

Active:

Some students have cancelled the class.

Passive:

The class has been cancelled by some students.


Continuous tenses

Active:

She is cooking soup in the kitchen.

Passive:

Soup is being cooked in the kitchen by her.

Active:

They were doing some assignments from school.

Passive:

The assignments from school were being done by them.

Active

We will be holding a meeting on next Saturday at 7 pm.

Passive:

A meeting will be being held by us on next Saturday at 7 pm.

Active:

I will have been learning Spanish for 2 years when I turn twenty.

Passive:

Spanish will have been being learned for 2 years when I turn twenty.

Active:

He would be finishing his thesis last semester.

Passive:

The thesis would be being finished by him last semester.

Active:

They would have been learning English for 2 years by the end of this year.

Passive:

English would have been being learned for 2 years  by the end of this year by them.

—Jika terdapat 2 objek, maka kita juga bisa membentuk 2 kalimat pasif dengan objek yang berbeda.

Active:

Somebody gave us some meals.

Passive:

Some meals were given to us.

We were given some meals.

— Cara membuat kalimat pasif dengan ekspresi “I don’t like being..” bisa dilihat di bawah ini.

Active:

I don’t like people telling me what to choose.

Passive:

I don’t like being told what to choose.

— Kita bisa menggunakan get untuk menggantikan be dalam kalimat pasif, biasanya untuk konteks yang informal/tidak formal.

There was an accident last night buut none got hurt. (pengganti none was hurt)

She often gets invited to some big events.

Juan didn’t get offered the internship.

— Akan tetapi, get bisa juga digunakan dalam konteks kalimat aktif.

— Untuk ekspresi dengan it is said that… he is said to… he is supposed to… yang mempunyai arti orang-orang/orang tersebut mengatakan bahwa dan biasanya menggunakan kata kerja (verbs):

Jennifer is a hadrworking person.

It is said that she works 18 hours a day.

She is said to work 18 hours a day.

The students are making experiment.

It is believed that the experiment will be very successful.

The experiment is believed to will be very successful.

It is raining heavily.

It is expected that it will stop soon.

The rain is expected to stop soon.

There has been a murder in that town.

It is alleged that Jacob has murdered the victim.

He is alleged to have murdered the victim.

There was a firehouse last night.

It is reported that tens of people died in the firehouse.

Tens of people are reported to have died in the firehouse.

— Penggunaan be supposed to, bisa mempunyai arti seperti it is said to… untuk beberapa kalimat.

I want to see the concert. It is supposed to be great. (the concert is said to be great)

— Peggunaan lain dari is supposed to yaitu bisa memberikan arti terhadap suatu hal yang seharusnya atau dimaksudkan lain dari situasi yang terjadi sekarang.

Chris was supposed to attend the class, but he was absent.

The party was supposed to be great but the food wasn’t tasty.

You are not supposed to talk very loudly when the teacher explains. (tidak dianjurkan/tidak diperbolehkan berbicara keras)

She is not supposed to work too hard.

— Bentuk lain yaitu dengan have something done, yang memiliki arti kita meminta atau membuat seseorang melakukan aktifitas. Ditandai dengan penggunaan past participle setelah objek dan kata kerja have disesuaikan dengan tenses yang dipakai dalam kalimat.

She had her hair cut. (seseorang memotong rambutnya)

They are having their cars parked. (seseorang memarkirkan mobil mereka).

Catatan:

Makna lain dari have something done yaitu untuk menyatakan kejadian buruk yang menimpa terhadap seseorang atau barang milik seseorang.

I had all my money stolen when I was in the market.

— Selain have something done, kita juga bisa menggunakan get something done dalam konteks informal tetapi dengan maksud yang sama.

I’m planning to get my bike repaired soon.
